"For those who think I jest, let me put forth four points, which is more points than most fans will see in a week of games¯and more points than most soccer players have scored since their pee-wee days." This excerpt Stephen A. Webb says in his article, which has the means of being an understated hyperbole, in many ways can be taken as mockery of those who participate in the sport. This statement is completely ironic according to the last paragraph because he talks in a manor that is seemingly defensive in nature. In the previous paragraphs he uses every opportunity to slander the sport, yet he defends it stating..."Soccer and relevision are the peanut butter and jelly of parenting; my kids and I come home from a soccer game a very happy family." His sarcastic and unappealing character create a hole not only in his pathos ,but his ethos as well. Typically if one does not like someone, they tend to see the other person's opinion as irrelevant. His seemingly back-and-forth nature damage his sense of credibility.
According to Stephen A. Webb's first point as to his reasoning behind why soccer is ruining America, it is safe to assume that he is idolizing hands through the use of biblical reference to further emphasize his point. Though he does make clear points and his reference to the bible are accurate, how do they go about proving his point? Speaking from personal experience, it takes an abundant amount of skill to keep a ball within your path of motion while in a full sprint; what doesn't take years of practice , to use his example, is to conjure up the ability to throw a baseball. He makes a point to go into grave detail about the revolting nature of feet yet he fails to mention the fact that hands could have just as many germs, if not more than that of feet because we touch everything with our hands. In some countries people only interact with others using their right hand because the left is used to cleanse oneself after using the restroom. I believe this point is invalid in reference to his topic of choice and is lacking in support of the claim being made.
Webb's categorization of soccer being predominantly a "female sport" is another prime example of the holes he creates in his ethos by not backing up this claim with supporting evidence and statistic reasoning. He uses an unlikely and easily disproven analogy when trying to back-up his claim that lacks supporting evidence,"...soccer mimics the paradigmatic feminine experience of childbirth more than the masculine business of destroying your opponent with insurmountable power." Throughout the article Webb displays several times his indifference towards the sport and how he sees it as possessing feministic qualities yet in the end he reveals his daughter's participation in soccer and how he supports it. His contradicting manor make for a confusing stand; the audience thus questions whether or not this man is serious or he wrote this with the intention of being completely satire.
